Authorities in Wichita are continuing to investigate after a woman was found dead Tuesday morning in Cessna Park, prompting an active death investigation and a temporary closure of part of the park while officials processed the scene.

According to the Wichita Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 8:30 a.m. to the area near Kincade and Wallace, close to the intersection of Mount Vernon and Woodlawn, following reports of an unresponsive woman located in a parking lot section of the park.

When officers arrived, they discovered the woman already deceased. Investigators stated that she appeared to have been in the area for an undetermined amount of time before being found. Early information initially led authorities to believe the victim may have been younger, though her identity had not yet been confirmed at the scene.

Officials later identified the woman as Julia Felt after next of kin notifications and standard investigative procedures were completed.

Preliminary assessments by investigators suggest the possibility of a drug overdose; however, authorities emphasized that the determination remains preliminary pending a full examination by the Sedgwick County Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials stated that the final cause and manner of death will be determined following an autopsy and toxicology analysis.

Police have said there were no immediate indications of foul play at the scene, though detectives stressed that the investigation remains active and that all possibilities continue to be reviewed until the medical examiner’s findings are finalized.

Following the discovery, officers secured a portion of Cessna Park as investigators conducted a detailed examination of the area and gathered evidence. Members of the public were temporarily asked to avoid the vicinity while police carried out investigative work and documented the scene.

Authorities have not yet released additional information regarding the circumstances leading up to Julia Felt’s death or whether she had been reported missing prior to being found. Detectives continue reviewing available evidence and are asking anyone who may have information related to the case to contact the Wichita Police Department.

The incident has drawn attention within the local community as residents await further details regarding what led to the woman’s death. Officials say additional information may be released once the medical examination is completed and investigators have a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the case.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine exactly what happened in the hours before Julia Felt was discovered at the southeast Wichita park.
